Glutamine has been a popular nutritional supplement for some time now, and with good reason. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue and in the bloodstream, and plays important roles throughout the body. One of the most visible effects of glutamine supplementation is its cell-volumizing ability because it leads to an increased rate of protein synthesis and faster recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage.

Supplementing with glutamine also minimizes muscle catabolism caused by intense exercise. Strenuous exercise can decrease the amount of free-form glutamine in the bloodstream. Muscle cells then break down and release glutamine to raise the bloodstream supply back up to a normal level. If taken before exercise, supplemental glutamine can prevent this muscle breakdown from occurring. It has also been proven to play a large role in the maintenance of a healthy immune system. A properly functioning immune system is vitally important to workout recovery. Intense exercise can weaken the immune system and lead to illness.

Most experts recommend taking at least 10 grams of glutamine daily, although some trainers experience stomach upset if such large quantities of glutamine are ingested at one time. If this is the case, it is best to split the dosage up throughout the day. It’s best taken immediately before and after workouts to keep bloodstream concentrations stable, and also before going to bed to prevent the muscle catabolism that occurs during sleep.
